The Story of Hajar (AS): The Woman Who Never Gave Up Hope
Have you ever felt like you're doing everything you can, yet nothing seems to change?
You've made du'a. You've cried. You've waited. You've taken every step you know how to take, but you're still standing in what feels like a barren valley.
If that's you, then the story of Hajar (AS) is for you.
Her story isn't just about the origins of Zamzam. It's about hope when there seems to be none. It's about trusting Allah when the outcome isn't visible. And it's a reminder that Allah never abandons those who place their trust in Him.
A World That Chose Falsehood
Before Hajar (AS) entered the story, the world around Prophet Ibrahim (AS) was filled with oppression.
The tyrant Nimrod demanded that people worship idols and even claimed divinity for himself. Anyone who opposed him faced severe punishment.
Yet Ibrahim (AS) stood alone, calling people to worship Allah alone. He challenged falsehood, destroyed idols, and was even thrown into a blazing fire for his belief.
Allah protected him, saying:
"We said, 'O fire, be coolness and safety upon Ibrahim.'"
(Qur'an 21:69)
Standing beside him through every hardship was his devoted wife, Sarah (AS).
A Test That Became a Blessing
During a famine, Ibrahim (AS) and Sarah (AS) travelled to Egypt.
There, Sarah (AS) was protected by Allah from a tyrant ruler. As they left Egypt, she was gifted a servant named Hajar (AS).
Years passed.
Sarah (AS) longed for a child, but none came. Out of love and sacrifice, she encouraged Ibrahim (AS) to marry Hajar (AS).
Allah answered years of du'a.
Hajar (AS) gave birth to Ismail (AS), the long-awaited son of Ibrahim (AS).
The Test No Mother Could Imagine
Then came a command that no family could have expected.
Allah instructed Ibrahim (AS) to take Hajar (AS) and their baby son to a barren valley.
No trees.
No crops.
No water.
No people.
That empty valley would one day become Mecca.
As Ibrahim (AS) turned to leave, Hajar (AS) asked him:
"Did Allah command you to do this?"
When he replied, "Yes," she said words that continue to inspire believers today:
"Then He will never abandon us."
That is the essence of tawakkul.
Not understanding the plan—but trusting the One who made it.
Before leaving, Ibrahim (AS) raised his hands and made this beautiful du'a:
"Our Lord, I have settled some of my offspring in a barren valley near Your Sacred House, our Lord, so that they may establish prayer. So make the hearts of people incline towards them and provide for them with fruits so that they may be grateful."
(Qur'an 14:37)
When Hope Meant Taking Another Step
Eventually, the food and water ran out.
Baby Ismail (AS) cried from thirst.
Hajar (AS) didn't sit down and wait.
She climbed the hill of Safa looking for help.
Nothing.
She ran to Marwa.
Still nothing.
She ran back again.
And again.
Seven times.
Every journey between Safa and Marwa was an act of faith.
She didn't know how Allah would answer.
She simply refused to give up.
At the moment she had nothing left to give, Allah sent relief.
The angel Jibreel (AS) struck the ground, and the blessed Zamzam Well sprang forth beneath baby Ismail's feet.
What seemed like the end of the story became the beginning of a miracle.
Why We Still Walk in Her Footsteps
Every year, millions of Muslims performing Hajj and Umrah walk between Safa and Marwa.
This ritual is called Sa'i.
It isn't simply a walk.
It is a remembrance of one woman's unwavering trust in Allah.
Every step reminds us that effort comes before relief.
Trust comes before seeing the answer.
Hope comes before the miracle.
Allah honoured Hajar's struggle so greatly that her footsteps became part of our worship until the end of time.
What Hajar (AS) Teaches Us Today
Many of us have our own "desert."
Perhaps you're waiting for:
A child.
Marriage.
Healing.
A job.
Rizq.
Peace after hardship.
An answered du'a.
Like Hajar (AS), you may not see a way forward.
But her story reminds us that Allah sees every sincere effort.
Sometimes, the answer isn't where you're looking.
Sometimes, it's already being prepared by Allah.
Your role is simply to keep running towards Him.
A Reflection for Your Heart
Where are you in Hajar's story?
Have you stopped because you can't see the outcome?
Or will you take one more step?
Remember:
Hajar (AS) trusted Allah before she saw Zamzam.
Perhaps your own Zamzam is closer than you think.
Never let hardship convince you that Allah has forgotten you.
He never abandoned Hajar (AS).
And He will never abandon those who place their trust in Him.
