The Story Behind the Deen Diaries Trivia Cards

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh,

At the heart of Deen Diaries is something deeply personal—a love for the deen that’s been part of me for as long as I can remember. I’ve always found so much peace and inspiration in studying Islam, whether it’s reflecting on the powerful words of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ or learning from the wisdom found in Hadiths. Gaining knowledge about our faith has always felt uplifting, and sharing that with others brings me even more joy.

Naturally, this love for the deen found its way into my family life. Every Ramadan, I'd organise Islamic Quiz Nights with my niece and nephew. We'd take turns preparing 15–20 questions each, and the winner would earn a special treat of their choice. It was a fun way to bond—and to grow in knowledge together.

The Spark That Started It All

But one particular Ramadan, things got especially busy with prayers, Taraweeh, and Quran recitation. I found myself looking for a more convenient way to continue our tradition. I searched online for Islamic trivia cards, hoping for a ready-made solution, but I found very few options.

That's when I had a thought: why not create my own?

This was more than just a project.

My nephew was 14 at the time, and like many teens, he wasn't very connected to Islam. I realised that if I wanted his interest in the deen, I had to meet him where he was, with something engaging and fun. So, I set out to create Islamic trivia cards that would make learning enjoyable, especially during family game nights.

A Year of Dedication

What followed was a journey that began in February 2024—a journey filled with dedication, late nights, and deep reflection, all while juggling a full-time job. I spent months immersing myself in Islamic books, listening to lectures, and ensuring that every question and answer was both authentic and well-referenced.

And now, Alhamdulillah, one year later in February 2025, I officially launched these trivia cards—a milestone that holds a special place in my heart. But that’s a story for another day.

Conversations That Matter

One of our favourite questions from the set was:
“What are the five pillars of Islam?”

It opened the door to deeper conversations about why we fast, why we pray, and what these pillars mean in our daily lives. Every question became a chance to reflect, connect, and grow together in faith.

Take Salah, for example. My nephew, like many teens, asked, “Why do we have to pray five times a day, and why at different times?”

So I shared a story that always moves me deeply.

The Story of Salah

It was during Al-Israa wal-Mi’raaj—the miraculous night journey—when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was taken to the heavens, to a place even Angel Jibreel couldn’t enter. In his mission on earth, every commandment had come through the Angel Jibreel. But not this one. This time, Allah ﷻ called His beloved Prophet ﷺ directly to Him—to deliver a message so important, it couldn’t be sent down.

That message was Salah.

Originally, we were commanded to pray fifty times a day. But after the Prophet ﷺ humbly asked for ease on behalf of his Ummah, it was reduced to five prayers, with the reward remaining as if we had prayed all fifty.

Scholars say this reduction wasn't random—it was significant. Imagine praying fifty times a day. We wouldn't have time for anything else. And that's the point: Salah is meant to be the centre of our lives. It’s not a side act—it’s the core of who we are as Muslims. Everything else we do is secondary.

So when I explained this to my nephew, I said: “Allah could have made all the prayers at one time—but He spread them across the day to help us detach from the dunya. Whether we're at work, school, or resting, Salah is there to bring us back to Allah, to ground us in what truly matters.”

Seeking Knowledge: A Path to Paradise

As the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
"Whoever travels a path in search of knowledge, Allah will make the path to Paradise easy for him."
(Sahih Muslim)

In Islam, seeking knowledge is a sacred act, and when it's shared, it becomes a form of Sadaqah Jariyah (ongoing charity). Teaching beneficial knowledge leaves a lasting legacy, a ripple effect that can benefit generations to come.
